Original New Zealand art prints by Walter Hansen

Walter’s prints take inspiration from the things flying around us in Aotearoa New Zealand. The printing methods and materials are as important as the design itself – letterpress printing and screen printing are chosen for their visual depth and tactility.

Tīeke Tour Screenprint

$185.00 NZD

The native birds in the Wattlebird group make great music, so I designed a series of posters to promote their nationwide gigs. This one follows on from the sold-out editions of The Huia Show and Kōkako Come Back.

Once unceremoniously ‘expatriated’ from New Zealand’s mainland and exiled to perform only on small islands, the Tīeke (Saddleback) has yet to fully recover to tour its homeland once again. Unlike the Tuī, Kākā, Kererū, Riroriro (and even Kārearea!) that regularly fly past my window, I’m yet to spot a Tīeke.

Two colourways are available – South ‘Taukihepa’ Edition (Green) and North ‘Taranga’ Edition (Red).

Two-colour screenprint on 216gsm Environment paper stock.

Hand embossed, signed and numbered.

500mm × 750mm

Limited edition of 60 of each colourway

Kōwhai Squadron Screenprint

$155.00 NZD

As a kid, I loved building model jets – even though I was pretty terrible at it. Impatience played a role here. The application of the decals was my favourite part. After the baffling construction and tedious glue-drying phase was over, I could kit them out in their squadron’s livery and get to dogfighting them around the house. Tūī, by my observation, are nutters and show-offs – quite like daredevil fighter pilots – and I took it upon myself to design a fantastical decal set to celebrate that.

Taking cues from military fighter planes’ ‘low visibility’ grey-on-grey paint jobs, these are screenprinted in metallic silver on beautiful 270 gsm Mohawk Via Felt paper stock, in an edition of 40 in each colourway.

Hand embossed, signed and numbered.

500mm × 500mm

Chirp Letterpress Print

$80.00 NZD

Why do we call a Tūī a Tūī, but usually refer to a Korimako as a Bellbird? This print features typefaces designed by Joseph Churchward, and birds designed by Aotearoa New Zealand. Like the larger screenprint Sing, the birds are presented in their Māori and English names.

Two-colour letterpress printed on Somerset 500gsm paper.

Hand signed and numbered.

220mm × 220mm

Limited edition of 70

Wattle Bird Quartet Screenprint

$150.00 NZD

This is the ‘big day out’ of the Wattlebirds Gig Poster series. The dream line-up of the Huia, Kōkako and Tīeke come together one last time to send their swirling melodies through the Kōwhai forest by starlight.

Screen printed on metallic gold cast-coated 250gsm Chromalux stock, that has a glossy finish.

Signed and numbered.

Tīeke Tour Letterpress Print

$100.00 NZD

This is the third and final individual gig poster design in the Wattlebirds series. The Tīeke (aka Saddleback) were unceremoniously expatriated from mainland New Zealand due to the introduction of stoats, rats and other undesirables. Fortunately they didn’t go the way of their Huia relatives, and managed to survive on islands and continue to perform their popular tunes. A mainland comeback tour will hopefully be on the cards.

The titling font is a custom design based on the proportions of Trade Gothic.

Two-colour letterpress printed on 500 gsm Somerset stock.

Hand embossed, signed and numbered.

210mm × 297mm (A4)

Limited edition of 70
