In a world of shifting ecological and political landscapes, Te Ohu Kaimoana is required to hold the line determined by its 58 iwi entities and urban representative Māori organisations, against the Crown and influential, powerful international lobbyists. We collaborated with artist Kereama Taepa to revitalise Te Ohu Kaimoana’s visual identity. Kereama digitally sculpted a marakihau &nbsp;–&nbsp;a moana-dwelling taniwha. In traditional pūrākau, marakihau protect the seas and the people, act as guardians – but can also be known to be fierce, uncompromising and often misunderstood. This became the central metaphor and visual cornerstone of the brand. A physical taonga of the marakihau was 3D-printed and resides in Te Ohu Kaimoana’s head office in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.We designed a bespoke typeface that took inspiration from Kereama’s sculpture, using the unaunahi pākati that line the haehae in the brows, mouth and horns. There are 58 of these in the sculpture, representing each of the iwi entities.We scooped a bronze medal at the 2025 Best Awards for this project. We created a style guide that defined a new colour palette and typography system that added consistency, flexibility and variety to their busy social media and web outputs. &nbsp; The identity graphics are an expression of ‘Pāho’ – the way Te Māngai Pāho supports creators’ content being broadcast in different forms to all areas. The three lines in each graphic expression reflect the Piki ki te Rangi in their logo. In this flowing form, the graphics represent the connection between creators and audiences. We developed it by creating a suite of graphics, refining their colour palette and developing a new typography and grid system to organise and present their content clearly and consistently. &nbsp; The identity graphics represent the interconnected flowing of knowledge to and from Te Mātāwai – the fountainhead or source – and imagine the form of the wake of a marakihau.The first application we did using refreshed identity was to the 2022–23 Pūrongo ā-Tau / Annual Report. The approach to the new identity was typography-led, to hero te Reo Māori in all expressions of the brand. The grid system was designed to clearly structure information, and allow for large kupu and rerenga kupu to be used in all applications, from annual reports and street posters, to instagram posts. We reworked the iconic Te Taura Whiri and Kia Kaha te Reo Māori logos (the Kia Kaha hei tiki was originally designed by KE Design) for better clarity and impact in a small-screen social media environment, as well as creating a new logotype for the ReoMāori website. The graphics and patterns are created from the same angle of the niho taniwha in the logo, in a range of different expressions and degrees of complexity. The graphics represent people’s te Reo knowledge going from simple to complex, and the continous strengthening and proliferation of the language over time. The graphics informed the design of the acoustic panels in the award-winning office fitout done by RGC.
